or do not care to what detrimental health effects they have done
or are doing to the breed.

in Australia is up to future puppy owners. It is all in your hands as YOU make the choice who you do and do not buy your puppy from!

It is very important to spend time to research your breeder information which includes your American Bulldog's family history.
The first question you should ask your breeder is "do they health test their breeding dogs?".
The American Bulldog is known to be prone to some health problems.
The major ones are N.C.L. (Neural Ceroid Lipofuscinosis),
Ichthyosis, and Hip/Elbow Dysplasia.

The gene that carries this disease is recessive and this means that an affected puppy would have to get it from both parents.
If a breeder mates two dogs who have been tested and they are certified NCL Clear, then the puppies will be all NCL Clear by parentage.
The ONLY other mating combination is NCL Clear x Carrier and the puppies will have to be tested before mating.

HIP & ELBOW DYSPLASIA
Hip and Elbow Dyaplasia (HD/ED) is a debilitating problem that causes lameness and pain in the hips and/or elbows of dogs.
Hip and/or Elbow Dysplasia is abnormal formations of the hip and/or elbow joints. As the dog grows the structure of the hip and/or elbow joints becomes badly formed.
The only way to tell if a dog has or is prone to this is by an X-Ray by a Vet and have the X-Ray's examined by a specialist.

Ichthyosis is an inherited skin disease that is affecting the American Bulldog's not only in Australia but also worldwide.

Ichthyosis is a hereditary disease of the skin (and sometimes the eyes) in dogs and it is noticeable soon after birth.
This disease makes puppies/dogs lives very uncomfortable.
Ichthyosis is an incurable condition where there is thickening of the skin and those severely affected can also experience painful swelling of the foot pads.
Affected dogs have a rough skin covered with a thick layer of fat flakes or scales that stick to the skin and hair.
This causes varying degrees of discomfort, pain, and itching. Cases vary from mild to very severe.
Ichthyosis is difficult and time consuming to treat and the dog will never fully recover.
To treat, the dogs will require weekly, if not daily, bathing with veterinarian medicated shampoos and the application of oils to the skin to keep the dog comfortable and to protect the skin from infections.
Most vets are not aware of Ichthyosis and they will treat for bacterial or fungal infections. Testing for the disease via skin-biopsy is not reliable at all.
