IMPORTANT MESSAGE!!

(Puppy Buyers and American Bulldog Owners please read this!)

We at Gray's American Bulldogs are very concerned as currently in Australia there is only a "very few" of ethical American Bulldog breeders.

It is worrying the number of American Bulldog breeders  that are unaware or do not care to what detrimental  health effects they have done or are doing to the breed.

At Gray's American Bulldogs we believe the fate of the American Bulldog in Australia is up to future puppy owners. It is all in your hands as YOU make the choice who you do and do not buy your puppy from!

It is of equal importance, that the same amount of time and thought should be taken for choosing which breeder you want to buy from as to what puppy you want to take home.

Hopefully, that when buying a puppy does not become a time you regret, later on down the track.

By purchasing a puppy with pedigree papers and health tested parents should be your number one priority.

HEALTH TESTING

WARNING!

It is very important to spend time to research your breeder information which includes your American Bulldog's family history.

The first question you should ask your breeder is "do they health test their breeding dogs?".

The American Bulldog is known to be prone to  some health problems.

The major ones are N.C.L. (Neural Ceroid Lipofuscinosis), Ichthyosis, and Hip/Elbow Dysplasia.

N.C.L.

(Neural Ceriod Lipofuscinosis)

THERE IS NO CURE!!

NCL is an inherited neurological disorder that is affecting the American Bulldog's not only in Australia but also worldwide.

Once your dog is affected, THERE IS NO CURE!! The only humane treatment to relieve the  affected dog's suffering is by euthanasia!

Please watch this video of an American Bulldog with N.C.L.

The gene that carries this disease is recessive and this means that an affected   puppy would have to get it from both parents.

If a breeder mates two dogs who have been tested and they are certified NCL Clear, then the puppies will be all NCL Clear by parentage.

The ONLY other mating combination is NCL Clear x Carrier and the puppies will have to be tested before mating.

The following is an example of how the gene is passed on;

NCL Clear x NCL Clear.................................All puppies are NCL Clear

                                                                           (100% healthy litter)

NCL Clear x NCL Carrier...............................50% puppies are NCL Clear

                                                                       50% puppies are NCL Carriers

NCL Carrier x NCL Carrier.............................25% puppies are NCL Clear

                                                                       50% puppies are NCL Carriers

                                                                       25% puppies are NCL Affected

NCL Carrier x NCL Affected...........................50% puppies are NCL Carriers

                                                                       50% puppies are NCL Affetcted

NCL Affected x NCL Affected.........................All puppies are NCL Affected

                                                                           (100% Affected litter)

There are very few American Bulldog Breeders in Australia who are testing their breeding stock.

Testing is the only way to STOP the spread of this cruel disease.

DO NOT believe the Unethical Breeders who claim, without testing, that "NCL is not in my dogs bloodlines, so their is nothing wrong with my dogs!"........the only way to know for certain is by testing.

By making sure that the parents of your next puppy, have been tested and are certified NCL Clear then, YOU the puppy buyer can help put an END to this disease.

HIP & ELBOW DYSPLASIA

Hip and Elbow Dyaplasia (HD/ED) is a debilitating problem that causes lameness and pain in the hips and/or elbows of dogs.

Hip and/or Elbow Dysplasia is  abnormal formations of the hip and/or elbow joints. As the dog grows the structure of the hip and/or elbow joints becomes badly formed.

The only way to tell if a dog has or is prone to this is by an X-Ray by a Vet and have the X-Ray's examined by a specialist.

Normal Hip Joint                                                          Hip Dysplasia Joint

Elbow Dysplasia

All dogs used for breeding should first have both their hips and elbows X-Rayed for HD/ED.

DO NOT believe Unethical Breeders who will tell you "there is nothing wrong with my dogs because they jump in and out of the ute and they are OK!".

This is NOT a way to tell that your dog does not have Hip and Elbow Dysplasia.

By making sure that the parents of your next puppy, have been X-Rayed then, YOU the puppy buyer can help minimise this problem.

ICHTHYOSIS

THERE IS NO CURE!!

Ichthyosis is an inherited skin disease that is affecting the American Bulldog's not only in Australia but also worldwide.

Once your dog is affected, THERE IS NO CURE!!

Ichthyosis is a hereditary disease of the skin (and sometimes the eyes) in dogs and it is noticeable soon after birth.

This disease makes puppies/dogs lives very uncomfortable. Ichthyosis is an incurable condition where there is thickening of the skin and those severely affected can also experience painful swelling of the foot pads.

Affected dogs have a rough skin covered with a thick layer of fat flakes or scales that stick to the skin and hair. This causes varying degrees of discomfort, pain, and itching. Cases vary from mild to very severe.

Ichthyosis is difficult and time consuming to treat and the dog will never fully recover.

To treat, the dogs will require weekly, if not daily, bathing with veterinarian medicated shampoos and the application of oils to the skin to keep the dog comfortable and to protect the skin from infections.

Most vets are not aware of Ichthyosis and they will treat for bacterial or fungal infections. Testing for the disease via skin-biopsy is not reliable at all.

The gene that carries this disease is recessive and this means that an affected   puppy would have to get it from both parents.

If a breeder mates two dogs who have been tested and they are certified Ichthyosis Clear, then the puppies will be all Ichthyosis Clear by parentage.

The ONLY other mating combination is Ichthyosis Clear x Carrier and the puppies will have to be tested before mating.

The following is an example of how the gene is passed on;

Ichthyosis Clear x Ichthyosis Clear.................All puppies are  Ichthyosis Clear

                                                                           (100% healthy litter)

Ichthyosis Clear x Ichthyosis Carrier...............50% puppies are Ichthyosis Clear

                                                                      50% puppies are Ichthyosis Carrier

Ichthyosis Carrier Ichthyosis Carrier.............25% puppies are Ichthyosis Clear

                                                                      50% puppies are Ichthyosis Carrier

                                                                      25% puppies are NCL Affected

Ichthyosis Carrier x Ichthyosis Affected...........50% puppies are Ichthyosis Carrier

                                                                      50% puppies are Ichthyosis Affected

Ichthyosis Affected Ichthyosis Affected..........All puppies are Ichthyosis Affected

                                                                           (100% Affected litter)

We were the FIRST Breeders in Australia to test for Ichthyosis.

There are very few Australian American Bulldog Breeders who are testing their breeding stock.

Testing is the only way to STOP the spread of this cruel disease. 58% of American bulldogs in the world are carriers (symptoms not visible) or affected (symptoms are visible).

DO NOT believe the Unethical Breeders who claim, without testing, that "Ichthyosis is not in my dogs bloodlines, so their is nothing wrong with my dogs!"........the only way to know for certain is by testing.

Unethical Breeders continue to breed untested dogs, the puppies with Ichthyosis are removed from the litter and euthanized. The puppies with healthy skin stay alive and are.....SOLD! The puppy buyer is completely unaware!

Please be aware that this Buyer Beware page also relates to Imported Dogs. Just because a dog is "Imported" does not mean it is healthy and free of these diseases.

Always insist on seeing results and "original certificates" as proof that the health testing has been done on both sire and dam of your new puppy.

If the Breeder will not show you the certificates for "all" testing then please look for another Breeder.

By making sure that the parents of your next puppy, have been tested for Hip and Elbow Dysplasia and have been tested for NCL and Ichthyosis with certified results.

Then, YOU the puppy buyer can help put an END to these diseases.
